Why Charles Wood?
From Josephine Carr:
“I have had a lot of people ask how I first came across Charles Wood. Some years ago I started researching my grandfather’s life. He sadly die when I was young but I remember him very well. He had been a jump jockey before retiring to become stud manager for Zoros Michalinos at Jevington Place - the yard Charles Wood built to breed and train from, as detailed in the Jevington chapter of the book.
One of my fondest memories of Papa was watching him watch the racing on TV. He never bet, but he always rode the finish, his old wooden chair creaking under the strain.
As I researched I discovered that I keep my horses in the yard Charles Wood built for his son, James.
Once I started looking at Charles’s life I thought that is was a story that must be told. As a lawyer by training, I was struck by the way he was treated and how the judges and regulators appeared to target him. I then became intrigued as to why they would do so. And that led to his life story being told - a story of scandal and redemption.”
